5.1 Methodology and Assumptions

Our basic method of analysis was to compare population simulations. We were inspired to use this method by the following methods employed by the UN: the comparative demographic projections method, which examines the effects of changes to demographic variables––such as fertility, mortality, and migration––on age composition (United Nations 1988); the method used to examine the long-term effects of reduced mortality on total population (United Nations 2000); and the method that serves to explore the effects of “replacement migration,” defined as the number of immigrants necessary to offset the decline and aging of the population (United Nations 2001b).
